And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him
-- Colossians 3:1
We believe that service is an integral part of what we do here in Veritas. And although we're all busy with other things such as research, coursework, and church activities, we strongly believe that service plays a critical role in our development as Christian graduate students and as individuals seeking to learn more about the Christian faith. (Not to mention that service can also provide a welcome break from the usual graduate school stuff!) Hence, our service events!
Our service opportunities can be roughly divided into three types: weekly Homeless Ministry, semesterly service nights, and other volunteer-led activites.
Homeless Ministry (Weekly)
Our Homeless Ministry meets weekly on Saturday mornings to distribute socks (and sometimes food) to the homeless in Berkeley. We are always for volunteers to help with distribution. This is a great way of showing love and mercy to our less fortunate neighbors. It can also be a life-changing experience for those who serve. Please contact Will Johnson ([email protected]) for details on how to get plugged in! You may also find more information on this page.
Other Volunteer-led Events
Some goals of other service events are to 1) bring together like-minded Veritasians in acts of practical service, 2) to provide a chance to fellowship both with one another and members of the broader East Bay community while 3) helping to meet a practical need of some members of our broader community. We're always looking for volunteers to help lead our community in other service opportunities. If you're planning to serve your community in some way, shoot an email to to the Veritas community ([email protected]) and invite people along! If you'd like to help us make it a more official Veritas event---or even a regular one!---contact Veritas leadership ([email protected]). In the past we've had monthly service events, and we'd love to have people volunteer to lead those again.
Project Peace Service Dates
Veritas partners with Project Peace in organizing the quarterly Day of Service. Usually 200-400 people of all ages from local faith-based groups to social service providers, tackling their needs to support the work they do in education, homelessness, youth development, and more.
Volunteers choose a local community site and contribute “sweat equity” - working with their hands, heart, and sweat - to meet the site’s needs for three hours on a Saturday from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.
